Election Day
-Election Day Tuesday, November 4, 2008
-The United States presidential election of 2008, will be the 56th consecutive quadrennial United States presidential election and will select the President and Vice President of the United States.
-The 2008 election is particularly notable because:
- it is the first time in U.S. history that two sitting senators will run against each other for president
- it is the first time an African American is a presidential nominee for a major party
- it is the first time both major candidates were born outside the continental United States (Hawaii for Obama and the Canal Zone in Panama for McCain).
- It is the first time a woman, Sarah Palin (governor of Alaska), will be on the ballot for one of these positions.
- it will be the first time in American history in which one of the two candidates on the winning ticket was not a Caucasian male.
-The Libertarian Party has nominated former Congressman Bob Barr
The Constitution Party has nominated pastor and radio talk show host Chuck Baldwin
The Green Party has nominated former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney.
Ralph Nader declined to seek the Green Party nomination and is running as an independent candidate.
-As in the 2004 presidential election, the allocation of electoral votes to each state will be based partially on the 2000 Census. Utah has five (5) electoral votes.
The president-elect and vice president-elect are scheduled to be inaugurated on January 20, 2009.

This is a listing of who has filed for what office in the Summit County Clerk’s Office. The candidates had to file before 5pm on March 17th. Please note that State races may be filed for at the Lt. Governors office or in another County that the district shares a boundary with.

Voter Registration Deadline in the State of Utah is twenty days (Wednesday, October 15, 2008) before the election.
Included on the ballot wil be:
- National Election for President and Vice-President of the U.S.A.
- State referendums and local elections will also be included.
- The election will coincide with the 2008 Senate elections in thirty-three states.
—State Senate Districts 19 and 53 - The House of Representatives elections occur in all states.
—U.S. Congressional District 1 – P.C. includes Silver Springs. - The gubernatorial elections occur in eleven states.
—Not in Utah this year - Summit County Council (County Commissioners)
—3 four year terms and 2 two year terms, eleven candidates on ballot - PC School District 2 (Silver Springs)

ABSENTEE VOTING
Absentee Voting is available to any registered voter upon submittal of an absentee ballot application prior to deadline. Absentee voting is normally used by persons that will be out of town on election day or during the early voting period. The voter requesting an absentee ballot must have a mailing address for the ballot to be mailed to and received by them.
The registered voter must contact the Summit County Clerk’s office at (435) 615-3204 to request an Absentee Ballot application form or download and print the application form from –

All applications/requests must be in writing and state: Name, physical address, mailing address or alternate mailing address (where the ballot should be mailed to) if different from physical address, and must include the registered voter applicant’s signature.

Who is eligible to vote absentee:
Any person who is registered to vote may vote by absentee ballot (See Utah Code 20A-3-301).
How to apply for an absentee ballot:
For absentee voting in statewide general and primary elections (held in even-numbered years),
this application must be filed by-mail or in person in the office of the voter’s county clerk.
For municipal primary and general elections (held in odd numbered years),
the application should be filed by-mail or in person in the office of the city clerk or recorder.
When to apply for an absentee ballot:
Following are the deadlines for submission of the absentee voter ballot application:
1. For regular absentee voting, the clerk should receive this application no later than the Friday before the election.
2. For voters who are overseas, the clerk should receive this application no later than 20 days before the election.
3. For persons voting an absentee ballot at the office of the clerk or recorder, the clerk should receive this
application no later than the day before the election.
NOTE TO VOTER: This application form must be received by the clerk or recorder no later than Friday before election, or 20 days before election for persons who are overseas, or Monday before election, if person voting an absentee ballot does so in the clerk or recorder’s office.
